When you look at our company and wonder why our CleanLight UV-C gear is so popular and reliable worldwide, you start with the CleanLight founder, Arne Aiking. He has decades of experience in forestry and other agriculture-related industries, and his idea for using ultraviolet light as a sanitizer and sterilizer in agriculture, food production, public spaces and health facilities came in a most interesting way.

What happened is that Arne was working as a  forest scientist in Chile many years ago when he noticed a small army of female forestry workers diligently shuttling small trees from their nighttime home in a greenhouse out into the sunlight every morning. When Arne asked the women and their employer why they did this, they told him sunlight is a natural disinfectant that kills all the pathogens that build up on the plants overnight.

Arne responded by saying, “Your young trees are getting sunlight inside the greenhouse so why do you need to move them out into the open?” The forestry workers explained that most greenhouse materials block the ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation that kills pathogens on plants and other surfaces. Arne started researching UV-C and discovered to his delight that it is indeed a very powerful disinfectant and anti-pathogen.

Inspired by the idea of using UV-C to stop devilish pathogens that cost farmers and others hundreds of millions of dollars every year and could threaten our food supply, Arne spent years working with agriculturalists, agronomists, plant scientists, engineers and other experts to create the world’s best UV-C gear for fighting pathogens.

Looking at the above illustration you can see that violet light is the lowest visible light on the spectrum. It is around 400 nanometers. Further to the left we see UV light. Ultraviolet light gets its name from the fact that it is just beyond violet. Ultraviolet Light is between the visible spectrum and x-ray spectrums.

Ultraviolet light occurs naturally in sunlight although much of it is blocked by the Ozone. The wavelength of ultraviolet light is between 100 and 400 nanometers. Just like the visible spectrum is broken up into different colors of light, so to is Ultraviolet light which is broken up into UVC, UVB and UVA light.

UVC light is between 100 and 280 nanometers.
UVB light is between 280 and 315 nanometers.
UVA light is between 315 and 400 nanometers.

Ultraviolet light occurs naturally in sunlight although much of it is blocked by the Ozone. The wavelength of ultraviolet light is between 100 and 400 nanometers. The positive germicidal properties of UV light have been known since the 1930s. Since then it has been used to sterilize workspaces, purify air and disinfect drinking water. CleanLight light is able to penetrate the outer membrane of microbes stopping them from reproducing.
The specific wavelength that combats fungus, bacteria and viruses on plants is combined with the parabolic reflector so it can be used in the horticulture. The large dose of UV used in air and water disinfection would be damaging to plants. The CleanLight Home & Garden uses a lower dose of UV than is used when disinfecting air or water. The Cleanlight method uses this low dose of UV light with frequent treatments giving the best results.
